In his translations of Chinese classic texts, he often cited Western references to make it easier for readers to understand. Gu Hongming’s “The Spirit of the Chinese People” Gu then explained how such gentleness came about, with references from both Chinese classics and Western philosophers like Matthew Arnold, Goethe and Thomas Carlyle. Later, he described “the spirit of Chinese people” as “the Chinese style of humanity” - “inexpressibly gentle” and a combination of sympathy and intelligence. Gu added that one more characteristic is essential to an understanding of the Chinese: “Delicacy to a preeminent degree such as you will find nowhere else, except perhaps among the ancient Greeks and their civilization.” The Germans are deep, broad, but not simple.” “The English are deep, simple, but not broad. “The American people are broad and simple, but not deep,” he observed. In this widely translated book, Gu pointed out that understanding the Chinese civilization requires someone to be broad-minded, simple and deep. German writer Oscar Schmitz, who translated Gu’s “The Spirit of the Chinese People” into German in 1916, wrote in the introduction that Gu “belongs to the very rare characters who are free from nationalist narrow-mindedness as well as from characterless internationalism.” In 1920s, his articles and interviews with him were also published in major American media like “The New York Times.” ![]() His writings in English were translated into German and French and were quite popular in post-World War I Germany. He held that there was “very little difference” between the East of Confucius and the West of Shakespeare and Goethe, arguing that true civilizations were distorted and threatened by false liberalism and materialism. Gu often debated with Westerners in English-language newspapers, questioning what he considered shallow modernization at the expense of culture. He was also the Confucian scholar who fascinated writers like Somerset Maugham, Rabindranath Tagore and Ryunosuke Akutagawa when they traveled to China. The strangely paradoxical image that Gu presented was the Chinese gentlemen in Leo Tolstoy’s 1906 “Letter to a Chinese Gentleman,” in which the Russian writer wrote that he was touched by the books on Chinese wisdom written and sent to him by Gu. Gu Hongming responded to students who laughed at his hairstyle My queue can be seen, and yours are in your hearts. That concept was generally considered backward and ultraconservative in the Republic of China that was founded in 1912 to replace the toppled Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). In the years of debate over the future of China in the post-dynasty period, Gu argued for a Confucian-based monarch, where the monarch would fulfill what constitutes a “saint” according to Confucian thought. “My queue can be seen, and yours are in your hearts,” he once responded to students who laughed at his hairstyle. He also dressed in traditional clothing when short hair and Western suits were already mainstream fashion. Yet despite his worldly knowledge, he wore his hair in the traditional queue style of front and sides shaved, with a long braid down the back. He studied literature, civil engineering and law in various European countries. Gu Hongming (1857-1928) was fluent in English, French, German and Russian, and was versant in Latin, Greek and three other foreign languages. The best English literature professor at 1920s Peking University was also a stalwart defender of Confucius in a time when most of his students and colleagues were drawn to new Western concepts. Regarding performance, however, it’s a bit tricky. I have yet to encounter any crashes or freezes and for the most part, everything works as intended. Indiegala had done well making a pretty stable game. But going back and forth between areas across the region just isn’t fun in its current state. If the world were a bit more compact where it mattered (like in unnecessarily-large fields) or if there were more to explore/more threats to fight or avoid, I wouldn’t nearly have as big an issue with it. There’s little to do between points/buildings with actual objectives to them. That said, it seems like there isn’t much of a reason to have made Die Young an open-world game. Fortunately, the world feels a bit more compact after passing through the Bull gate, making the world feel a bit less empty. Should you choose the latter option, they don’t seem to respawn, making your travels that much duller. You’ll be met with a few hostiles trying to go from one point to another, but they can either be easily avoided or killed. Within the first area, you’ll have several points of interest that you can explore scattered about, yet they’re few and far between and, for the most part, running between them is quite uneventful. Unfortunately, life doesn’t necessarily equate to an engaging world. From the warm, arid tones combined with the wide variety of flora and fauna that you’ll encounter all around the island, it’s clear that there was a lot of effort put into making this game feel alive. The island itself is beautifully crafted. Your hydration meter depletes as time goes on, but it does so at such a slow pace (on the lower difficulty) with an absolute abundance of food and water to quench your thirst. Within the survival aspects, you’ll need to manage your health and your hydration, the latter of which is quite trivial to maintain. However, managing your crafting resources is crucial, as you can only carry a very small amount of each resource. While you’ll be able to scrounge around for stuff like tools, food, and healing supplies, you’re also given ample chances to create almost everything you could ever need. The final and probably most important component of Die Young is its survival/crafting systems. There is barely any incentive to initiate combat, which feels like such a waste of a good system, especially later on as you acquire the crossbow. Unfortunately, it’s quite easy to simply bypass fights by either running away or sneaking around them. The combat system requires you to take your time with your enemy and analyze and work around their attack patterns. When you aren’t dealing with people at a distance with a crossbow, you’ll be up close and personal trying to fend the enemy off with an assortment of weapons. The combat in Die Young is woefully understated and incredibly fun. Once you find either of these, it will be marked on your map, as well as sources for both fuel and water, making it easier to plan a trip on foot. Firepits allow you to both save and quicksave as well as cook any raw meat you happen to have on hand, and there are hidden safe spots located in several regions that allow you to fast travel to other safe spots, rest for the night, and even stow away important items or collectibles. ![]() Saving and Fast Traveling exist in the form of findable locations. When in the open world and avoiding enemies, your feet and your quick-thinking are what you’ll be needing to outrun and outmaneuver your aggressors. When in the explorable points of interest, you’ll be doing a lot of climbing and platforming, whether you’re scaling mountains to dizzying heights or figuring your way around an old, crumbling building. There are different upgrades for your character strewn about the map, from extra pieces of equipment to backpacks to increase your inventory size.ĭie Young has a very intuitive and engaging parkour system. While it’s not hard to go from start to finish, taking your time to explore can be very beneficial. ![]() Exploring around, you’ll come across a few points of interest, be they abandoned buildings or elaborate, maze-like zones. You have no direction, aside from a note beckoning you towards a tower up north, though you’re free to roam around as you see fit. You’re thrust upon a wide-open world with nothing more than a map, a compass, and the clothes on your back. ![]() In any case, the white flag was dropped before World War I. Presumably Theodore Roosevelt's expansion of the Navy made it impractical to continue with a different color flag for every admiral present. This system is shown in editions of Jane's Fighting Ships circa 1905. Earlier in the century, the blue flag with white stars was used for the senior of a given rank, the red for the next senior, and the white flag with blue stars (now used by officers not eligible for command at sea) for the junior. That system was in effect for the 1938 edition of HO 89, "Flags of the United States and Other Nations," which depicts the red variant and describes its use. If the senior put to sea, the next senior would then strike his red flag and break a blue one in its place. For example, the senior rear admiral present at Pearl Harbor would fly two white stars on a blue flag and rear admirals embarked on other ships two stars on a red flag. Whether they were in command or not was not at issue. Red Version: Non-Senior Officer Present (obsolete)įrom the early 20th century until about World War II, USN used white stars on red flags to denote flag officers who were not the most senior of the rank present at a given location. It may routinely be seen up to the three star level (for example, flown by the Surgeon General at the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery in Washington), although there have been a rare few instances of restricted line officers rising to four-star rank (Hyman Rickover was an engineering duty officer). That includes the various staff corps (Supply, Medical, Dental, Nurse, Medical Service, Chaplain, Civil Engineer, and Judge Advocate General) but also flag officers in the restricted line such as engineering duty officers, intelligence and cryptography specialists, and oceanographers. To clarify, the white flag with blue stars is flown not only by Supply, Medical, and JAG Corps officers but by all officers not eligible for command at sea. My current route for this game (in terms of branches), is BAAB. I pretty much stick with the starting weapon the whole route, but I'm going to experiment with grabbing a huge, heavy weapon near the end of the game (Stage 13-2B), to help make the ending stages easier. You can steal weapons from enemies, and after stage 7-1 you can buy weapons and equip weapons you earn in the story by going to the Armory. ![]() I've tried playing on a controller but I don't recommend it because you can't be as precise as you can with a mouse.įinally, there's lots of different weapons in the game. Otherwise you can't get going fast enough. So you can't level skip twice in a row.Īnother key things is setting the DPI really low. Usually, you should be able to get enough money for a level skip just from playing a single stage, as long as you try to get all the money that comes out of enemies. So, for each level I also list the fastest suicide strategy I've found. But you can't actually do it on all stages. One of the key things in this game is that there is a level skip that you can purchase if you have enough money and you die 3 times. The naming convention is kind of weird, but basically the letters and numbers that follow the stage indicate the branches that wer taken to get to that stage, except I started using 1 and 2 instead of A and B. They are in Dropbox and are located here. I have save files for every single stage in this game, so you can just copy a file into your hammerfight save folder and load up the stage. It kind of gives you an idea of the difference in suicide vs. Here is also a spreadsheet that, although outdated, lists the times I got for individual levels (measured from the level overview screen that says the level name, until the results screen fades in completely). Here is a google doc containing pretty much everything I've found out about the game so far including descriptions of every single level and branch. I've been working on doing an any% run of this game and decided it was time to share my research with everyone and maybe generate some interest in running it. Also, the level skip mechanic and variety of weapons makes for interesting route planning. From a running perspective, I think it is interesting because of the loose-nature of the physics-based gameplay meaning you have to react very dynamically to what is going on. This game is fun because SMASHING THINGS. You can get it on Steam for pretty cheap right now. It is in English, but it was released in 2009 by a Russian game company.
